An internal staircase between Level 13 and Level 14 was requested by the client. The structural consultant proposed the construction of 2m wide stairs, using steel C channel stringers with folded checker plates to form the steps. The steel SHS posts were raised to support stringer beams at every change in direction on the landing at the middle level. Fibrwrap Construction Pte Ltd was awarded as the main contractor for the structural work.

Level 14 floor was a two-way post-tensioned (PT) flat slab with drop panels and had a knockout panel 3.75m x 3.0m. The opening had to be widened to 4.5m x 4.0m to achieve clear headroom. Due to the enlargement of the opening, tendons of the Level 14 flat slab were impacted. Before the demolition work was carried out, these tendons were cut and re-anchored.

The analysis and design of the structural strengthening works were performed by engineers from Fibrwrap Construction. 3D Finite Element Analysis (FEM) was adopted to determine the impact of demolition on the Level 14 flat slab. To meet the new requirement, the flat slabs were strengthened using the TYFO® Fibrwrap® Systems. Strengthening was also carried out on the slab around the new opening using the TYFO® Fibrwrap® Systems, to compensate for existing trimmer bars cut during demolition. To ensure structural integrity, the demolition was carried out after strengthening the slab.

Fibrwrap Construction completed a whole package of structural strengthening, tendons re-anchoring, slab demolition and new staircase steelwork within the allocated timeframe to the satisfaction of all parties.
