Jewel Changi Airport, one of the most iconic structures in Singapore, built at a cost of S$1.7B, was opened in 2019. A nature-themed entertainment and retails complex surrounded by, and linked to one of the passenger terminals of Changi Airport, it houses the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, called the Rain Vortex. Surrounded by a terraced forest setting, it is a very popular attraction to both the tourists and the locals, and draws hordes of crowds any time of the year.
Being such an important building, it is designated a critical structure by the Infrastructure Protection Act of Singapore, which requires it to be protected at critical areas against any bomb threats. It is, no wonder, that its structural elements such as slabs, beams and columns are protected against any bomb blast.
Fibrwrap Construction Pte Ltd was invited by the Main Contractor to submit a proposal to mitigate casualties and damages in the event of a bombing occurrence. Fibrwrap Construction’s team of engineers analysed several scenarios of a bomb occurrence and proposed a most efficient strengthening method using the TYFO® Fibrwrap® Composite System that was accepted by the Blast Consultant.
The overall blast mitigation works were carried out by Fibrwrap Construction and successfully handed over on time.
