Constructed in the early 1930s, the former Beach Road Police station served as housing for its employees and their families and was crucial in preserving law and order during Singapore’s turbulent pre-independence era. GuocoLand plans to incorporate this heritage property into a mixed-use development aimed at revitalizing the Beach Road District, following its commercial sale in 2017.
As a result of the structure’s advanced age and increased design loadings, maintaining structural stability was crucial to assuring the inhabitants’ safety. The investigation concluded that strengthening was required for most of the structural elements.
Conventional reinforced concrete jacketing was used to strengthen the columns. To reinforce the majority of the beams and slabs as well as some of the columns, the TYFO® Fibrwrap® Composite System was proposed and ultimately selected. Strengthening using the TYFO® Fibrwrap® Composite System improved the axial, flexural, and shear capacities of the structural elements.
While the entire restoration project was completed in early 2024, the strengthening work was completed in October 2023.
