Units 2 and 16 are double-storey bungalows built after World War II. These bungalows are among the group of conservation bungalows located around The Oval, which originally used to accommodate Britain’s Royal Air Force personnel and their families.
Plans were underway to renovate these conservation buildings to offer additional facilities for Seletar Aerospace Park. Due to the advanced age of the buildings, the concrete had degraded, and the reinforcing bars had corroded. Moreover, as the buildings were to be repurposed as offices and clinics, there was an increase in the design live load which they must support.
Considering the changes and the current condition of the buildings, an analysis revealed that it was necessary to reinforce the existing slabs to support their new intended use. The TYFO® Fibrwrap® Composite System was recommended and approved for strengthening the slabs. Furthermore, the TYFO® Corrosion Inhibitor Systems (CIS) were administered to the structure before the strengthening works to enhance the porosity and durability of the concrete and to control the steel reinforcements’ corrosion. The strengthening works were completed in February 2019.
