The Shell Refinery in Pulau Bukom, Singapore, relies on this cooling seawater pipe made of carbon steel with cement coating to control the temperature inside the facility. Over time, exposure to extreme conditions had led to corrosion and subsequent leaks in two sections of the pipe. It was crucial to address this issue without lengthy shutdowns that would disrupt refinery operations. Therefore, the proposed solution involved using the TYFO® Fibrwrap® Composite System to rehabilitate the 20m and 30m segments of the damaged seawater pipe.
Prior to granting final approval for the site installation, a mockup test was carried out on a pipe sample resembling the actual pipe needing repair. The tests produced promising results, thus leading to the execution of the actual site installation.
The entire process of repairing and rehabilitating using the TYFO® Fibrwrap® Composite System was completed in under two weeks, averting an extended shutdown of operations in the refinery.
